About

Free online GIS and mapping tools, built on public data

GeoWorkbench is a free online GIS and mapping tool suite for professionals and general users — covering coordinate conversion, land area calculation, FEMA flood zone lookup, elevation data, ZIP code boundaries, census demographics, and more. Each tool pulls directly from government and open data sources and presents the results in a clean, usable interface. No account, no paywall, no data collected about you.

What GeoWorkbench is

Most of the data behind these tools is already publicly available — maintained by federal agencies and published for anyone to use. GeoWorkbench connects to those sources directly and presents the results in a way that's faster and easier to navigate than the official tools, which are often built for technical audiences.

The tools are web-based and designed to be self-explanatory. Most work by clicking a map or typing an address, with results appearing immediately. There's nothing to install and nothing to configure — it's free online GIS access without the overhead of a full GIS software package.

Data sources

Results displayed by GeoWorkbench are retrieved in real time from the following sources. GeoWorkbench does not store, alter, or republish this data.

USGS 3DEP
US Geological Survey 3D Elevation Program. Used by the elevation lookup tool to return elevation above sea level for any US location. Covers the contiguous US with up to 1-meter resolution.
FEMA NFHL
FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer. Used by the flood zone checker for FEMA flood zone lookup by address or coordinates. Official source for flood zone designations — AE, X, VE, and all zone types — across the US.
US Census TIGER
US Census Bureau TIGER/Line geographic boundaries and American Community Survey (ACS) data. Used by the ZIP code lookup tool for boundary mapping and the demographics lookup tool for tract-level census data.
OpenStreetMap
Open-source geographic database maintained by a global contributor community. Used for address search and geocoding via the Nominatim API.
CartoDB / Esri
Base map tiles from CartoDB (street map) and Esri World Imagery (aerial/satellite). Used as background map layers across all tools.

Accuracy and intended use

GeoWorkbench is intended for general reference and informational use. Results reflect the underlying data from each source and are subject to the accuracy limitations of those datasets. FEMA flood maps are updated periodically, elevation values carry an inherent interpolation margin, and ZIP code boundaries are tabulation areas that may differ from USPS delivery boundaries.

For decisions involving property transactions, insurance, lending, permitting, engineering, or legal determinations, always verify results with the relevant official source or a licensed professional.
